Spiced Treacle Cookies Recipe is made with plain flour, dark treacle, soft brown sugar, butter, ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. This traditional Spiced Treacle Cookies Recipe creates a warmly spiced dessert that takes about 30 minutes to prepare and can serve up to 20 people.

Spiced Treacle Cookies Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups (280 g) plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (170 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) soft brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup (80 g) dark treacle (or molasses)
  • 1 large egg
  • Extra brown sugar for rolling

Spiced Treacle Cookies Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) Lay two baking trays on each sheet of parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients — In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar — in a large mixing bowl cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Fill up the sauce with treacle and egg – put dark treacle in and beat egg into sauce until all mixed up.
  5. Combine wet and dry — gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mix and combine until you have a soft dough.
  6. Shape the cookies — Roll the dough into walnut sized balls, and roll each ball in more brown sugar for that wonderful sparkle and crunch.
  7. Bake — Spread the cookies 2 inches apart on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes until the edges are set but the insides are still soft.
  8. Cool and enjoy — let the cookies cool on the tray for 5 minutes before moving them to a wire rack.

Recipe tips

  • Slightly warm the treacle: If your dark treacle has a little lump in it, put the jar into warm water for a few minutes and it will pour out better and mix in well into the dough.
  • Chill the dough for a little extra chewiness: On days when I don’t want to be in a hurry, I chill the dough 30 minutes before rolling so the cookies can bake with more texture and a bit more bite — the way Marcello likes them.
  • Add extra spice: If your family really likes the more spicy taste, add an extra teaspoon of ginger or cinnamon. That is going to make your kitchen smell like Christmas morning.

How To Store Spiced Treacle Cookies

Refrigerate: Leave the Spiced Treacle Cookies to cool completely and then store in an airtight container with parchment paper between the layers, to prevent them from sticking for up to 5–6 days.

Freeze: if you want them to last for several months freeze them. First put them all on baking tray in one layer and freeze until solid, then put in freezer-safe container/resealable bag and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature when you want to eat them, no reheating required unless you want that freshness from the oven feeling.

How To Reheat Leftover Spiced Treacle Cookies

In The Oven: Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the cookies on a baking tray and cover with loose aluminum foil (to prevent over browning) for about 5–7 minutes or until they are warm through.

In The Microwave: Add 1 – 2 cookies to a microwave safe plate. Cover loosely with a microwave – safe cover or wet paper towel to keep them soft. Heat on medium power for 10 – 15 seconds — just enough to warm them up and let them smell good.

In The Air Fryer: Heat the air fryer to 300°F (150°C) and place the cookies in a single layer in the basket. Bake for 2–3 minutes, checking halfway to make sure they ‘re still soft and not dry out.

What to serve Spiced Treacle Cookies

Spiced Treacle Cookies Recipe pairs well with hot chocolate, spiced chai tea, warm apple cider, and a glass of cold milk. It also can be served alongside vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, fresh berries, and a slice of fruitcake for better savoring of the meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use molasses instead of dark treacle?

Yes you can replace dark treacle with molasses. Just think molasses is slightly more flavorful and the cookies may taste a bit more aggressive.

Why are my cookies coming out flat?

This happens mostly because of the soft butter or the dough is too warm ( you can try chilling the dough for 20-30 minutes before baking to keep them together).

How do I know when the cookies are done?

Look for set edges and slightly soft centers. They will firm up as they cool, giving you that perfect chewy bite.
